Midway Games has had some financial issues in the past and was hoping to get something going with a bid war. Warner Bros was the only bidder for the struggling video game company. Check out the news via the LA Times. Quote: Times up! The deadline for submitting bids to buy Midway Games passed Wednesday afternoon with just one offer -- a $33-million deal from Warner Bros. to purchase most of the bankrupt Chicago company's assets. After Warner Bros. lobbed its offer in May, Midway had hoped to spark a bidding war that would jack up the price. A Chicago investment group and several game publishers had been kicking the tires at Midway, according to a source familiar with the discussions. But none pulled the trigger on a deal. "No other bids came in, so there's not going to be an auction," confirmed Midway's spokesman, Geoff Mogilner. Before the deal goes through, the Delaware court overseeing Midway's bankruptcy will have to resolve complaints by several creditors about the acquisition process. One of those is producer Larry Kasanoff's Threshold Entertainment, which produced two previous "Mortal Combat" films and claims it has exclusive big-screen and TV rights to the series. Also objecting to the sales process is Tigon Studios, a production company controlled by Vin Diesel, which claims it is owed $200,000 for the star's work on the recently released game "Wheelman." The next court hearing to address those and other issues will be July 1. As soon as they are resolved and the bankruptcy court officially approves Warner Bros.' bid, the acquisition will close 10 days later, Mogilner said. Warner Bros. declined to comment. An acquisition would buttress Warner's growing game portfolio, according to a report today in the Times. The offer includes most, though not all, of Midway's assets, including the company's Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter, Joust and Wheelman franchises. It also includes two of Midway's four development studios -- one in Chicago and another in Seattle. It remains unclear what will happen to the company's studio in Newcastle, U.K., which makes the Wheelman games, and its studio in San Diego, which is developing a wrestling game based on a license with TNA Entertainment. Those assets could potentially be sold to another buyer. |
Interesting news for sure, Midway doesn't having any current game announcements besides This is Vegas by the Seattle studio and Necessary Force by the Newcastle studio. The deal doesn't seem to include both these studios which puts another few question makers over it. In an interview with Kotaku, id's John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead explained how changing circumstances with Activision and other studios spurred id's sale to Bethesda parent ZeniMax. Quote: id Software is still a development studio that commands respect, but it's one that had found itself not quite fitting in of late, its principals told us during a phone interview tied to the announcement of the company's sale to ZeniMax. One of the problems lately, Carmack told Kotaku, is that id just wasn't a good fit with big publishers these days. "As we were shopping Rage and Doom and upcoming stuff, talking about all of that, we were getting a pretty consistent line from all the publishers," he said. "They were willing to continue to fund our working with partner companies for all of these but pretty much ever publisher said, ‘Well, it would be worth much more to us if you would grow your studio and do more of your own work internally. That's why we already started to staff up to do Doom 4 internally. So things were already moving in that direction." Carmack spoke specifically of Activision, where id's games such as the upcoming Wolfenstein (developed in partnership with Raven), would be published under the same label as works from Activision's internal studios, like Call of Duty and Modern Warfare studios Treyarch and Infinity Ward. "Going back to a much earlier time," Carmack said, "We were just Activision's shooter shop. We did the FPSes there. There was no conflict, and that was great. But they brought on their own internal studios and there's a very real conflict there between whether they want to put resources behind something they own the IP for and derive all the profit for versus something where they don't own the IP and they might feel like any effort they're putting into it isn't going into their value but somebody else's. That problem has grown over the years as budgets have increased." |

ZeniMax Media on Wednesday announced the acquisition of Id Software, the game developer behind titles like Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein and the upcoming game Rage. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. ZeniMax Media is the parent company of Bethesda Software, makers of Fallout 3, as well as The Elder Scrolls III and IV. Bethesda will publish Id Software titles going forward, beyond those that have already been promised to other publishers. The acquisition by ZeniMax Media joins together two of the finest, most respected videogame developers in the world, combining the first person shooter (FPS) expertise of id Software with acclaimed role playing game (RPG) developer Bethesda Game Studios – creators of the 2008 Game of the Year, Fallout 3, and the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda Softworks will publish the titles of id Software other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers.
Founded in 1991, id Software established itself as an industry leader with some of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video games of all time. id Software created the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, and subsequently set new standards in the genre with the blockbuster releases of its DOOM and QUAKE titles. In addition, id Software developed cutting edge, proprietary technology with the id Tech engine which powers many notable FPS titles, and continues to make great advances in game technology under the direction of John Carmack, one of the country’s technology leaders and a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Hall of Fame.
